ehh, depends where you get your enjoyment from and alot on context, the question begins an ends with 'what are the consequences of implementing this change to the lore/setting/ideas for the campaign?' it's not a 'always change the lore' or 'never change the lore' kind of thing. You have to be an adult and make the difficult decision about balancing the verismilitude of the setting against the enthusiasm the player character has for their idea. The DM's view on what is important for the setting is an important element of play. If you come to the evening if you come with no interest in the DM's setting and a preconceived notion of what you will enjoy playing today then you will have a bad time just like you will have a bad time if the DM is staunchly opposed to any change at all. Checking in and having an earnest discussion about what you want out of the campaign is super important. it's easy to write off the DM as having to enjoy thier role vicariously but it's an unhealthy approach to write off people who's enjoyment of DMing is not entirely player character serving.

I will retcon the shit out of my lore if you actually show up regularly.

Burning Wheel's Wise system is a pretty interesting take on this. Something that could be adapted for other RPGs too.

I would say a player that would not want to work with their DM about the lore, might not be a very good player to have at your table however

This would be easily refuted with a simple example: if the adventure was about slaying the world's most powerful lich, what would you do if the player said, "But i want to play as the most powerful lich."?

Talk with your players. If the player wants something you really don't want, find a compromise. Neither will have a lot of fun just being subservient to the other. You are playing together after all.

On the other hand the DMs enjoyment is *just* as important to the game as the players enjoyment. If a player stops having fun and leaves that's one player gone, if the DM stops having fun then that's it, the game is dead, I've experienced burnout like that before and it sucks, trying to do everything I can for my players only for them to not like the product and the ultimate failure of not one but 2 games because of me just ending up hating the failed state of those two games. personallyI believe it's something in the middle, a two way street one side should not give up their end of the rope to the other

Bullshit. The GM is the world, and the world should not be subservient to the players. It is effectively the GM’s job to use the world to limit the players; because creativity spawns from limitations. If the player wants a truly limitless creativity experience, then they should go write a book.

AD&D I played a Half-Orc Half-Orc, the Half-Orc class was only available to the Half-Orc race. They were the sneaky stealthy type.
